Hot, Hot, Hot – Pizza in the Spotlight

June 26th, 2022

They say pizza is life. And by they I mean Nicolas Cage, an actor who has sparked as much
debate as the pineapple topping, in the movie Moonstruck (1987). Well, he was actually
talking about bread, but what’s pizza if not an elevated version of this popular baked dough.
Today’s article is all about hot and delicious gossip. In the spotlight, there’s our favorite
media personality of all times: pizza! But this gossip ain’t fresh like Paul’s Pizzas pies. We’re
going old school, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles kind of vibe.
“When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore” sang Dean Martin in the
50s, the decade in which pizza hit the mainstream. Love is what Drew Barrymore, who used
to have pizza parties with Leonardo DiCaprio, unquestionably feels for this meal. Would you
say it’s a coincidence that she has a daughter called Olive? The actress has often spoken
about her childhood crush on pizza that lasted up until her pizza cravings during her
pregnancy. But just like virtually every celebrity’s love story, there’s breakups and drama in
this tale. A few years ago, Drew said goodbye to her favorite food to start a very strict diet. A
sad fate for such a relatable relationship. Once Drew Barrymore, now Drew Barryless, has
confessed, "I've been very disciplined and all I did was cry and dream about pizza. I still am
dreaming and crying about pizza."
The difference with other lovers is that pizza will always be there for Drew if she ever wants
to reheat their affair. Perhaps one day she’ll adopt the philosophy of Julia Roberts’ character
in Eat, Pray, Love:
I’m so tired of saying no and waking up in the morning and recalling every single
thing I ate the day before. Counting every calorie I consumed so I know exactly how
much self-loathing to take into the shower. I’m going for it. I have no interest in
being obese; I’m just through with the guilt. So this is what I’m going to do, I’m
going to finish this pizza and then we’re going to go watch the soccer game and
tomorrow we’re going to go on a little date and buy ourselves some bigger jeans.
-Liz Gilbert, 2010 CE

Let’s praise the wisdom of a character whose awakening journey involves a significant cameo
appearance of our favorite star, Neapolitan pizza. “I’m in love. I’m having a relationship with
my pizza”, she voices with a mouth blessed with a great pizza capacity. Yet another great
romance that overcame the decades, as Roberts breakthrough role was a teenage girl who
came to age while working at a pizza parlor in the late 80s film Mystic Pizza. Fun fact: Mystic
Pizza is actually a real pizza joint in Connecticut, although the movie wasn’t filmed in that
location.
We could drive 700 miles from Detroit to Mystic, but why would I do that when there’s the
best pizza near me? On the other hand, there’s some pizzerias we’d love to visit but
unfortunately are out of the picture. Pixar’s iconic Pizza Planet travels with its food truck
across various of their movie scenarios, from the scene in Toy Story where we meet the claw-
worshiping aliens, to Paris (Ratatouille, 2007) and even outer space (Wall-E, 2008). Daria
(1997-2001) would often visit her local Pizza King with her friend Jane, and Futurama (1999-
2023) has Panucci’s pizzeria, where the main character used to work as a delivery guy before

being accidentally cryogenically frozen to be thawed 1,000 years later. Fry’s not the only
fictional delivery guy to have a hard time during their work shift. One of Home Alone (1990)
most memorable moments is when Kevin’s “lovely cheese pizza” arrives and Little Nero’s
employee is scared off by one of this child’s clever tricks.
Whether your family has gone on holidays and left you behind, you’re pregnant or retiring
from a long diet, or you’re just feeling romantic, you know what to do. Paul’s Pizza is just one
phone call or stroll away whenever you’re craving some good old pizza.
